How Anonymous Posting in Facebook Groups Works

Anonymous participation in Facebook groups allows sensitive questions and experiences to be shared without revealing the member’s name to other group members. This feature is designed mainly for support, parenting, health and community groups where privacy encourages more open discussion. When a post is made anonymously, the group sees it from an anonymous participant instead of the regular profile name. The real profile remains visible to Facebook systems and to group admins and moderators, which helps maintain safety and enforce group rules.
Requirements Before You Can Post Anonymously
Anonymous posting must be enabled in the group by its admins. If the group owner or admins turn off anonymous participation in Group settings, the option to post anonymously does not appear for members. This feature is not available for every group or every account. If you cannot see the option after checking carefully, it usually means the group does not allow it or the feature is not yet rolled out to your profile.
Steps to Post Anonymously in a Facebook Group
On the Facebook mobile app, start by opening the group where you want to share your post. Tap the field that says “Write something” or similar, then look for a toggle or prompt such as “Post anonymously” or “I want to post anonymously.” Turn on the anonymous option, acknowledge the information popup about how anonymity works, and then write your post as usual. When you tap Post, the content appears in the group under an anonymous label instead of your name.
Commenting and Interacting Anonymously
If anonymous participation is active, comments on your own anonymous post are also anonymous inside that thread. In some groups, tapping your profile icon next to the comment box allows selection of an anonymous member identity before posting the comment. Reactions such as likes can still be used on anonymous posts, but other members only see that an anonymous participant created the post. Admins and moderators continue to see the underlying profile so that spam, harassment or rule violations can be handled.
What To Do If You Do Not See the Option
When the anonymous switch is missing, first check that you are inside the group view, not on your main feed or a Page. If the feature still does not appear, the group may have disabled anonymous participation or may not support it at all. As an alternative, it is possible to contact an admin or moderator and ask them to post your question on your behalf without sharing your name. Some communities publicly offer this option in their group description or pinned admin posts.
